Intro to Early Childhood Education funny
Applications for the Fall 2027 program WILL BE available HERE in the fall of 2026.
These are due Tuesday, March 9, 2027 (see details on the first page of the application). 
This program is only open to those currently in Grade 11 or to returning Grade 12's. Applicants will participate in an interview in the Spring with Langara College and SD38 Career Programs staff.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
- Course TUITION IS COVERED BY THE RICHMOND SCHOOL DISTRICT #38!
- Successful students will EARN dual credits (high school and post-secondary) for the course(s) that support the continuation toward a full ECE certificate after high school.
- In first semester (Sept - Dec), Grade 12 student participants will attend Langara College and take these four courses:
ECED 1102 - Child Growth and Development I
- Students are introduced to theories and research related to child growth and development. The origins of child growth and development research are explored. Students examine the overall progression of how children change and develop from birth to three years of age. This
course focuses on child development in the following areas: physical, cognitive, social and emotional, and language.
ECED 1112 - Exploring the Environment I
- Students gain the knowledge and skills necessary to plan and implement play-based learning experiences throughout the early learning curriculum. Students begin to utilize a variety of observation techniques in order to interpret children’s interests and abilities and offer play-based learning experiences based on those observations and interpretations. Students need access to early learning and care programs in order to complete this course successfully.
ECED 1116 - Knowing the Individual Child
- An introduction to the general principles of growth and development in the early childhood years with particular emphasis on methods of observing, recording, and documenting behaviour.
ECED 1119 - Practicum I
- In early childhood education training, supervised field work prepares students to work with young children in a variety of early learning settings. During this first practicum, students gain practical experience and begin to develop the skills needed to plan and implement a curriculum for young children ages three to five. They regularly consult with an on-site sponsor teacher to learn about the responsibilities of program implementation and practice planning curriculum for young children. With the support of the centre staff, students actively participate in daily routines that promote the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive growth of young children.
- Students return to their home school in semester 2 of Grade 12 to take remaining high school course work
PRE-REQUISITES AND STUDENT ATTRIBUTES
- must have achieved a minimum of C+ in Language Arts 11, however English 12 preferred if possible
- ability to work both independently and in a group setting
- enjoys working with young children
- has excellent attendance
- registered in SD38 and entering Gr 12 in September
